Portsmouth & Southsea Show
The Portsmouth Group are pleased to report that,
at the Portsmouth & Southsea Shows Floral Marquee Inter
Society Competition, held over the weekend of 4th -
6th August 2006, the group's publicity stand won a
Silver medal for its floral design and display.
The display consisted of pots of geraniums and
chrysanthemums together with two pairs of old boots each with
a plant growing in it, amidst straw and grasses and single daisies.
The judges particularly liked the boots which gave the display
a rustic feel.
The main photographic display comprised two panoramic
views, of the Arun Valley taken from above Burpham, and Pagham
harbour. Various photographs of bluebells and cattle gave an indication
of the wonderful views that can be regularly enjoyed on the groups
walks.

The display was the backdrop to a table exhibiting
various RA publications including an extract of the group's current
walking programme. In addition, joining forms giving a 20% discount
on the first years membership together with an extra month
for paying by direct debit, made a most enticing offer for potential
members to consider.
Thanks to Les Bailey (Chairman), Marion Haly
(Secretary), David Nichols (Membership Secretary), David Hance,
Rosie Collings and Anne Vaughan-Spruce for manning the stand and
offering helpful advice to interested parties. Thanks also to
Mark Page (Footpath Secretary) for providing the majority of the
flowers - along with Les - and Andrea Burton for the donation
of an old pair of boots!
Adjacent to the RA stand was the South Downs
Campaign stand which gave visitors information on how the campaign
to form the South Downs into a National Park was progressing.
Owen Plunkett and his band of helpers were busy for much of the
weekend answering queries.
