Hummingbird Hawk Moth by Jeremy Bacon
Congratulations go to Jeremy Bacon of the SE
Hants group for winning £150 worth of Regatta gear for the
following picture of a hummingbird hawk moth which he entered
into a photographic competition run by Walk magazine (Winter 2006
edition, p21). The photo won in the Wildlife & Nature category.

Photograph by Jeremy Bacon.
About the photograph, Jeremy said "It was a lucky shot,
one of about half a dozen taken quite rapidly at 12 times zoom. The
moth is unusual in that it flies by day rather than at night.
It has a wingspan of 50-60 mm and looks very similar to a real
humming bird in its feeding movements."
Judge Keith Wilson said it was "a difficult subject, well
executed. Capturing a moving subject this small and magnifying
its size requires very precise focusing and astute shutter speed
selection. Jeremy has succeeded on all fronts here and that makes
him a worthy winner".
